INSURANCE HAS MANY BENEFITS AND HERE IS WHY

Opinion Editorial

By Nixon Shigoli the Managing Director, AAR Insurance Kenya

Health, economic and social catastrophes including the recent coronavirus pandemic expose the vulnerability of individuals, families, businesses, economies, and nations to unforeseen but catastrophic risks. On a positive note, more people now acknowledge the benefits of insurance when faced with such adversities.

A recent survey by the Geneva Association, a leading global insurance think tank, shows fourty percent of retail customers consider their health and health insurance more important since the onset of Covid-19. Similarly, half of the small business owners have made insurance including medical schemes for employees a priority.

These are very interesting insights considering insurance is often not a priority for many people including business owners. The perception of insurance as an unnecessary expense is a bigger hindrance to the uptake of underwritting products compared, say, to affordability. But this is mostly due to a lack of information about the financial benefits of insurance in a modern economy.

The fundamental goal of insurance is to provide financial protection against life’s misfortunes. Insurance helps individuals and organizations to plan better for the future. Rather than focus on the monetary cost of the insurance cover, one ought to consider the negative consequences of not buying insurance like the inability to recover a stolen or damaged asset.

Insurance involves more than just managing life’s risks. Other benefits incude enhancing the ability of the insured party to cope with the shocks of loss of life, ill-health, and property thus increasing their financial resilience not to mention the peace of mind.

There is also a savings aspect to insurance since it entails putting aside some cash as consideration for financial compensation in the event of an accident or other insurable risk. But since it is impossible to predict with precision when calamity will strike, insurance becomes a necessity in life.

We must therefore get rid of this mentality that insurance is money down the drain if the insured risk does not occur. Such a mindset prevents people from buying insurance even when they can afford it. Focusing on the financial benefits of insurance as opposed to being a personal or business expense is an even better selling point.

At AAR Insurance, we focus on the value underlying an insurance product from the perspective of the client’s life, health, and business. Getting customers to understand the underlying value in insurance is at the heart of creating products that deliver better experiences for them.

A few practical examples will illustrate this point. In the case of families, a medical cover means preventing a financial disaster due to illness and the stress of having to hold fund-raisers to pay hospital bills for a loved one, especially in these tough times when the cost of living has risen.

For businesses, medical insurance for employees ensures staff can access quality healthcare to enable them to remain productive while the firm is able to attract good human resources.

For small businesses, insurance may be used as a security for loans thus acting as a guarantee to lenders that their money will still be repaid. The true value here is in expanding credit opportunities for small enterprises to grow. For professionals, an indemnity cover protects them from legal risks in cases of damages awarded by a court for negligence and other claims.

The bottom line is that insurance comes with multiple financial benefits and is not limited to compensation for losses arising from a broad array of risks.

ELECTORAL AGENCY CHAIRPERSON IS NOT SUPERIOR TO OTHER COMMISSIONERS SAYS RAILA ODINGA LAWYER MWANGI

By Clive Ayuko

Nairobi, Kenya 31st August 2022

“.. My lords and Ladies? If you look at the qualifications used in the appointment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC commissioners and the Commission chairperson they are all similar. They are all vetted by the same body which is the National Assembly or Parliament. They are also appointed by the same person and that is the President of the Republic of Kenya. They all enjoy the same security of tenure and security of Salaries. Therefore the commission chairman is not the Independent Electoral and Boundaries and Commission and the IEBC is not the commission chairperson.

“The decision made by the poll agency should be collegiate and cannot be made by a single individual. The chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Mr Wafula Chebukati emasculated the powers of the other commissioners by taking the decision of tallying and announcing the electoral results as a single individual as He did when He announced William Ruto as duly elected” These words were spoken By Azimio la Umoja Coalition Always Paul Mwangi who was making submissions at the Supreme Court early today morning in a presidential petition filed challenging the declaration of William Ruto as duly elected by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The Lawyer wants the election annulled based on these unilateral nature in which the Commission chairperson Mr.Wafula Chebukati announced the Winner of the Presidential elections at the Bomas in an event marred by scenes of violence

Commenting on the results, John Gachora, the Group Managing Director of NCBA Group, said the results reflect the outcomes of the strategic actions that the Group has taken to support customers navigate the current macro-economic environment and a confirmation that the merger is bearing the fruits of its promise.

“Looking at our results, you will note that we have been deliberate in our effort to drive a diversified business serving a wide spectrum of customers. Our commitment to supporting customers by making it easier for them to access financial solutions underscores our improved Group performance. We have provided an enabling environment for businesses to continue to thrive by increasing our product portfolio and tailoring solutions to suit every customer’s needs especially during this period which experienced challenges from the Russia/Ukraine war and risks emanating from the political calendar. Through our digital banking partnerships (M-Shwari, Fuliza, Mpawa, Mokash and Momokash), we continue to provide much needed financial relief to many families and small businesses,” noted Mr. Gachora.

The Group registered a profit after tax of KES 7.8 Bn representing 67% growth up from KES 4.7 Bn in half year 2021. Growth in profitability was attributed to increase in operating income, strong expense management and a decline in impairment charges.  While the Group experienced revenue growth in most areas, non-interest income was particularly strong, thanks to an outperformance in foreign exchange revenues.  Thanks to a strong customer base and the Group’s ability to source, risk manage and supply foreign currency, the Group was the top earner of foreign exchange revenues during the period.  The Group’s retail expansion is also starting to pay off, helping maintain an acceptable cost of funds.

NCBA Group launched an ambitious branch expansion agenda last year which has seen it open 18 branches across the region in the last 18 months. This year alone, the Group has opened four branches in Busia, Utawala, Kenol and River Road and plans to open seven more branches by the end of the year.

“Opening of these branches creates job opportunities across the country and helps us take our services closer to the people. We believe that this wider distribution network allows us to contribute directly to the country’s economic growth agenda. The retail expansion is supported by continuous review of our products and services to make them more attractive and problem-solving to the communities we serve” said Mr. Gachora.

In this regard, the Group rolled out 15 secs pre-conditional approval on asset finance through which customers are able to get indicative approvals within 15 seconds of completing an online application. The program has seen a strong uptake and already over KES 2.5 Bn has been approved through this channel. The Group also launched an 11.9% promotional mortgage campaign to customers that has recorded customer uptake valued at KES 3 Bn. The mortgage campaign will run until the end of October.

NCBA also became the first bank to finance electric vehicles as part of its green strategy by injecting KES 2 Bn in asset finance, a move that the lender says will bolster its asset quality and support government’s effort to reduce carbon emissions in the country.

Future Outlook

“This period has demonstrated that the strategy that we put in place to ensure that we power and inspire the growth of our customers looking to improve their economic livelihoods is working. We remain focused on supporting our customers’ ambitions as we collectively work towards creating more opportunities for businesses and individuals to thrive,” added Mr. Gachora.

While releasing the H1 results, Mr. Gachora emphasized that the Group remains very optimistic with regard to overall macro-economic outlook. For that reason, the Group will continue to invest in the region and it supports the citizens dreams for a prosperous future. He emphasized that with the likely conclusion of the elections in Kenya, the region’s economy is set to benefit from likely transition dividends.

The Group remains committed to support the various governments and citizens in their overall growth priorities, Mr. Gachora concluded.
